hey yall [28 Aug 2007|10:39am]

reve_77
I'm actually working on a story for challenge #4. It may be a bad one, but it's a story. In fact, I've included most of the required elements already. I can't believe it's been almost two years since the last post to this community - it doesn't feel like that long!

PS Kytyn, since it's been so long since you posted the challenge I'd say you're eligible to contribute.

Public Service Announcement [15 Dec 2005|02:57pm]

Since I only just noticed this today myself, I thought I'd make a post for those who follow on their friends list or via some "community has been updated" service. There is a challenge going on right now! It's in the previous post. I plan to participate, so I hope others will too.
Cheers!

Challenge #4 [04 Oct 2005|05:00pm]

melydia
I guess slaygirl isn't going to post anything. And considering this community has lay fallow for over four months now, I wouldn't be surprised if others have left us as well. But like the phoenix or some other bad metaphor, we shall rise again with...another challenge.

So here's your requirements:

---------
One character must be either blind or deaf (bonus points if it's the narrator *grin*). Someone must say, "Why are there trees here?" Lastly, these all must appear in the story in some fashion: a piece of construction equipment, poor phone reception, and a paper doll.
---------

No deadline for this one; this challenge is open until we get two entries. If the second story is submitted and you're still working on something, make a post saying so and we'll wait for you. I'm much more interested in reading what you all have written than getting the next challenge out the door.

What next? [30 May 2005|02:28pm]

melydia
Well, it looks like slaygirl is still M.I.A. What would you all like to do? Shall we continue the informal exercises and wait for slaygirl to reappear, or should we go ahead and post another challenge?

Note: I decided to lock my response to Exercise 1 and put this discussion in a separate post. If anyone needs an invitation to join the group (though I'm almost positive you don't), please let me know.

Interim Writing Exercise A [24 Apr 2005|01:28pm]

reve_77
While we await another writing challenge, I thought I'd put something in the gap. This occurred to me on the long walk from my car to my office. It is not a contest, no winner, just some fun. It will run until the next challenge is posted or until someone else gets "inspired" and posts another interim exercise.

Exercise A
Here we have a Snoopy-esque story, based on one my friend Lynn wrote in middle school, which I know I have but alas, could not find. Hers was more wonderfully ridiculous. Flesh it out, using the first and last sentences as your first and last sentences, and keeping the same order in between.
It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly a shot rang out! The dog barked. The maid screamed. The sleuth searched for clues. Footprints appeared on the ceiling. A couple danced the tango across the floor. The perpetrator was caught. Everything ended happily.

As with the challenges, put it behind an lj-cut tag, and if it's too long for LJ's limit, link to it and we'll gladly read it on another webpage. Have fun!

Edit: I actually found the original story!
It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly a shot rang out! The maid screamed. The door slammed! The cookie jar was empty. There was a fire in the pool. The cat meowed. There was grass in the bathroom. The moose barked! Footsteps led to the ceiling - and the butler ran away with the spoon.

I'd say, use whichever you prefer.

Any challenge coming soon? No hurry, just wondering.

If I can make it work with the challenge, Maig, I'll post a story about Math Spice. Will you play too?

Challenge #3 winner! [04 Mar 2005|01:22pm]

melydia
It is my pleasure to announce that slaygirl won Challenge 3 with her story, "Almost..."

Now it is up to you to provide the next challenge. It can take whatever form you choose. The no-deadline thing was only for this past challenge; you are free to set a deadline if you wish.

Congratulations!

Wow! Four great stories so far:

Spirit World by reve_77
Almost... by slaygirl

Here's another chance to speak up. If you're still working on something, that's great - just comment or post to let me know. If nobody's spoken up by a week from now (February 17th-ish), I'll start the voting. Thanks and happy writing!

P.S. - If I have gotten any titles wrong or you would like to change the title of your story, please leave a comment.

Yeah, I'll put my work in as well, if I'm not too late...

The main character must be dead. Interpret this how you wish (ghost, vampire, zombie, whatever). At least part of the story must take place on the Winter Solstice. These elements must also make an appearance somewhere: a river, a handkerchief, and a prayerbook.

NOTE: now with some minor edits! ;)

Any more submissions? [31 Jan 2005|02:29pm]

We have two submissions. If anyone else working on anything? If so, please comment or post and we'll gladly wait for you. If nobody says anything in a week, I'll go ahead and start the voting.

Took a while, but now one month after the Solstice I have an entry. It's posted off-site: Spirit World. If nothing else, you should enjoy the picture of the solstice sunrise entering the door of the Megalithic Passage Tomb at Newgrange, Ireland (built about 3200 BC, see this site for more).

Challenge #3 [13 Dec 2004|10:28am]

As disappointing as it was to win by default, this community cannot operate without a current challenge, so here it is:

You may notice there's no challenge deadline. Deadlines don't seem to be the right approach with this group, so this challenge is open until at least two stories are submitted. If the second story is submitted and you're still working on something, make a post saying so and we'll wait for you. I'm much more interested in reading what you all have written than getting the next challenge out the door.

Closing the challenge [05 Dec 2004|11:43am]

reve_77
Well, I suppose Challenge #2 has come to an end. melydia wins by default, as she hoped she wouldn't, and writes the next challenge.

I'd like to suggest an amendment to the posting rules, to allow the person who writes the challenge to also submit a story. The challenge writer's story would not be included in the poll at the end to determine who wins and writes the next challenge. It would give us all (potentially) one more story to read, though, and give the challenge writer something to do during the long duration of the challenges (if he or she wanted to).

So let me know what you think of it in comments - keep the rules as-is or modify the ban on the challenge writer submitting to a ban on the challenge writer's story winning. And at some point expect Challenge #3 from kytyn!

All right, kids... [15 Nov 2004|12:35pm]

reve_77
...you have until the end of the month. If no one posts, kytyn wins by default and posts the next challenge, which hopefully will be responded to by more than one person. Otherwise we will have a poll with whichever stories appear by the end of the month. This doesn't work unless people participate; if all the members only spectate there will be nothing to watch. And what fun is that?

(I have my glasses down on the tip of my nose and am looking sternly over them at the computer screen, by the way)

Intro [10 Nov 2004|03:15pm]

[ mood | contemplative ]

Hello! I've joined this community, found via melydia.

I'm not accustomed to sharing my writing online (not counting the informal journal... heh), so the concept has me a bit nervous. I'll give it a try, though. I could stand to have some sort of impetus for writing stuff, and I like the idea of going for "wacky." It will force me to be less cerebral. ;) But I do have one question: are protected entries allowed?
